Cooking at home is the better choice if you enjoy it, have time most days and want full control over every ingredient. A delivered meal plan is the better choice if you keep running out of time, order takeaway on busy nights, or want someone else to handle your portions. We sell meal plans, so we have a side in this. That is why this page also says where cooking at home wins.
This guide is about cooking day to day. If you want to cook once a week in bulk, read meal prep vs meal delivery instead.
The short answer
| Cooking at home | Meal plan delivery | |
|---|---|---|
| Money | Groceries alone often come out cheaper | You pay more for the cooking and the delivery |
| Your time | You plan, shop, cook and wash up | You choose once, then the food comes to you |
| Control | You choose every ingredient | You choose from a menu and tell the kitchen what you avoid |
| Portions | You measure them yourself | The kitchen portions them for you |
| Variety | As wide as your cooking | As wide as the menu |
| Your household | One pot can feed everyone | You order for each person who wants it |
Where cooking at home wins
Money. If you only count groceries, cooking at home often costs less. To give you a yardstick, here is what two Dubai providers listed on their own websites on 2 November 2026. One charged from AED 999 for two meals a day over 4 weeks of 20 delivery days, which is about AED 25 a meal. The other listed AED 70 to AED 100 a day for the option we looked at, with the lowest daily rate on the longest plan. If your home-cooked meal costs less than that, you save money, before you count your time.
Control. In your own kitchen you decide what goes in, how much oil you use and what you leave out. If you have a severe allergy, that matters. A shared kitchen can't promise what your own can. Ours uses gluten, dairy, nuts, eggs, fish, shellfish, soy and sesame, so we can't rule out cross-contact.
A link with eating better. A US study of 9,569 adults compared people who cooked dinner 6 to 7 times a week with people who cooked it 0 to 1 times. The frequent cooks ate less: about 9,054 kJ a day against 9,627 kJ (roughly 2,160 and 2,300 kcal), with 81 g against 86 g of fat and 119 g against 135 g of sugar. This kind of study shows a link, not a cause. People who cook often may differ in other ways, and the study did not look at meal plans.
Your household. If you cook for a family, one pot feeds everyone. Ordering for each person adds up fast.
Skill. Learning to cook stays with you. A plan stops when you stop it.
Where a meal plan delivery wins
Your time. Cooking takes more than the cooking. In our example week of meal prep, 10 meals took about 5 hours once you add shopping, portioning and washing up. Those are our example times, not measured averages, so swap in your own. Cooking every day spreads that work across the week. It doesn't remove it.
Portions. Home cooking only helps your goal if the portions fit it. On a Sanos plan, the kitchen portions every meal for your plan, so you don't weigh, count or log anything.
Fewer decisions. A French study of 40,554 adults found that people who planned their meals ahead ate closer to the nutrition guidelines, had more variety and were less likely to be obese. It can't prove the planning caused this, and it looked at planning, not delivery. Still, a plan you choose in advance means dinner is decided before you're tired and hungry.
Busy weeks. Long office days, travel and heavy training blocks are when cooking slips first. A plan keeps the food coming on the days you pick.
Less going off in the fridge. Cooking for one or two can leave half-used groceries behind. UNEP's Food Waste Index Report 2021 put UAE household food waste at about 95 kg per person a year. If your groceries keep going off, add that to your cost of cooking.
What really decides it
The best option on paper is worth little if you stop after two weeks. Ask yourself four questions.
- How many nights did you really cook last month? Use the real number, not the plan.
- What did you eat on the other nights? If it was takeaway, compare a meal plan with your takeaway bill, not with your groceries.
- Do you enjoy cooking? If you do, keep doing it. It's time you like, not time you lose.
- Do you need strict control over allergens? If yes, your own kitchen is the safer choice.
How to compare the cost yourself
Take one normal week and add up what you really spent on food.
- Groceries, including delivery fees.
- Takeaway and delivery apps.
- Food you threw away.
- Your time, if you want to count it. Multiply your hours by what an hour is worth to you.
Divide the total by the number of meals you ate. Then build your plan and ask us for the price on WhatsApp, so you can put the two numbers side by side. Our meal prep guide has a longer version of this list.
The middle option: do both
You don't have to pick one. Plenty of weeks work better with a mix.
- Order lunches, cook dinners. Lunch is often the hard one on a work day.
- Order weekdays, cook weekends. Take weekdays only if you like to cook or go out at the weekend.
- Order one busy stretch. Use a plan for a heavy month at work or a training block, then go back to cooking.
If you cook most of your meals, our 7-day weight loss meal plan gives you a full week with a shopping list.
How a Sanos plan works
You choose your goal: weight loss, weight maintenance or muscle gain. Then you choose your meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks), your days (weekdays, weekdays plus Saturday, or the full week) and 1 to 8 weeks. Our chefs cook in our kitchen at 228 Jumeirah Street, nutritionists approve the plans, and we deliver anywhere in Dubai.
You can start with one week, so you can test it against your own cooking. See the meal plans side by side, or book a free nutrition consultation if you're not sure.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you are pregnant, have a medical condition or take medication, check with your doctor before you change how you eat.
FAQ
Is it cheaper to cook at home than to order a meal plan in Dubai?
If you only count groceries, often yes. If you also order takeaway on the nights you don't cook, or your groceries go off, the gap gets smaller. Add up one real week to find out.
Is a meal plan healthier than cooking at home?
Not by itself. Both can be healthy, and both can be unhealthy. What counts is what's on your plate and how much of it. A plan helps most when you find it hard to manage your portions or you end up eating out.
Can I lose weight cooking at home?
Yes. You lose weight when you eat a little less than you burn, wherever the food comes from. Read how a calorie deficit works to get started.
Can I try a meal plan without a long commitment?
Yes. Sanos plans run from 1 to 8 weeks, so you can start with one week.
